Standard Atlas of McLean County, North Dakota, 1914

Ancestry.com has a nice collection of land ownership atlases. None (yet) from Wyoming, but I still have lots of newspapers to rummage through there, so can hardly complain. Anyhow, while Mom's family was pioneering Wyoming, Dad's family was pioneering McLean County, North Dakota.

The cover of the atlas is here:

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1127&iid=gm_96-0537

From page 95:
Renfrow, Joseph, Farmer, S. 24, T. 147, R. 81, P. O. Turtle Lake. Mr. Renfrow was born in Missouri in 1858 and settled in McLean County in 1902. He is married to Laura A. Crawford; they are the parents of eight children.

From page 96:
Rutter, Edward, Farmer, S. 13, T. 149, R. 80, P. O. Ruso. Mr. Rutter was born in England in 1864 and settled in McLean County in 1911. He is married to Matilda Severson; they are the parents of two children.

The attached map segment is from page 34 of the atlas. My brain is hiccuping (today, anyhow) on what the Township/Range would be for the next block to the east. Maybe tomorrow! This is on the eastern edge of Township 146, Range 81...

Cutting Railroad Ties Above Buffalo

I cannot find my grandfather, Otha Marse (Sam) Grace in the 1930 census, which was taken not long before he married my grandmother, Edna Pearl Merrill, in Buffalo, Wyoming. So I asked Grandma where he might have been, and she said he had spent some time in the Big Horn Mountains, cutting railroad ties. Sounds like a place he might easily have been overlooked, when the census taker came through.

So anyhow, I found this little story (not about him) added a teensy bit of background to how cutting ties would work. Teensy!!!

O. L. Bartholomew Returns to Buffalo

O. L. Bartholomew, who proved to the world that ties cut in the Big Horn Mountains above Buffalo could be floated down Clear Creek successfully, returned to Buffalo Saturday evening after an extended business trip in the east. He is here on tie business. Mr. Bartholomew expresses himself in a very optimistic manner over the prospects of the North and South Railroad.

Seeking innovative spellings: Babion and Murrell

Being typeset doesn't mean the spellings are uniform. Another pass looking for Babion (rather than Babione) yielded new stories, and hinted at Merrill being sometimes spelled Murrell. On which note...

Mr. G. S. Babion, of this city, who has been working at the
shearing pens at Clearmont, was a caller at this office
yesterday. He reports that during the high water following
the late storm the big irrigation dam in Clear creek at
Clearmont gave way and was carried out, entailing a loss to
the owners of approximately $5,000. The ditch supplied with
water by this dam covered the U-Cross lands below Clearmont,
and of many other farmers in the lower Clear creek country,
and its loss a this time of year will be a serious drawback
to all concerned. -- Sheridan Post.

Famous Mine is Located Again
Lost Cabin Diggings Moved to Middle Piney Creek in the Big Horns
(Special to the Tribune)

SHERIDAN, Wyo., Sept. 19. - The famous "Lost Cabin" mine appears to
have been discovered again, this time on a fork of Middle Piney
creek a few miles above Story postoffice in the Big Horn mountains.
Recently the fabled mine was reported to have been discovered on
the opposite side of the Big Horns, fifty miles away, and on numerous
other occasions its discovery at widely separated other points in the
range in which legend says it exists have been reported. Always,
however, further investigations has revealed that the old workings
assumed to be those of the "Lost Cabin" mine were not on a vein
of the fabulous richness accredited to the Lost Cabin.

The old workings above Story which may be the Lost Cabin mine were
found recently by Kenneth Bellows, a Sheridan mining man, and William
Babione, a ranchman residing in the vicinity who is able to testify
that no mining operations have been carried on in that district during
the last 40 years. The men came upon an old tunnel, the entrance
concealed by underbrush and the roof caved in at several points.
This extended into the mountain 50 feet. At the end were two shovels
and two picks the handles of which had almost rotted away, two
rusty kettles and a heap of mouldering cloth and bones which may be
the clothing and remains of a man but which the explorers judged to
be deer or elk bones and rotted sacking. The presence of the tools,
placed as they would have been by a person intending soon to return
and resume using them, indicates that the owner probably was prevented
by some unexpected happening from returning.

near the mouth of the old tunnel Bellows and Babione unearthed what
appeared to be the rotted remains of a tent, and on a nearby peak
they found the remains of what probably was a stone lookout, probably
used in watching for the approach of Indians. Thirty years ago near
this spot Babione picked up a human skull.

A Neighbor Extends Sympathy

Another young man has gone from our midst; he has rode his last horse and lifted his last car. May he have peace on the other side. Our hearts beat for the one that rode by his side, for none will miss him as much. Yes, Roy, we will all miss you and may we all live so when we are called that we will be ready to go where there are no tears or sorrow.

The neighbors extend their sympathy to the family Mr. Babione.

AD MERRILL IS KILLED
Sheridan Man Meets Death in Accident at Miles City, Montana
DEATH INSTANTANEOUS
Horse Collides With Vehicle, is Thrown and Rider's Skull is Crushed

Last Thursday evening at 6:15 o'clock, Ad Merrill, who has been a
resident of Sheridan county for many years, and whose parents still
reside on Dry creek, northwest of town, met a tragic death at Miles
City, Montana. He had been helping a man named Tony Loftus corral
some horses, and started to go from the stock pens to the home of
a blacksmith to have some branding irons made for use in the early
morning. As he crossed the railroad track his horse shied from an
old shed building and collided with a passing buggy. The horse
got one of his front feet between the spokes of the buggy wheel
and was thrown. The rider fell clear of the horse, but in such
a manner that the back of his head struck the hard ground with
force sufficient to crush his skull and he died almost instantly.

His friends here were notified by wire, and on Saturday afternoon
Mr. Loftus arrived in charge of the remains. Funeral services
were held Sunday from Smyth's undertaking chapel, conducted by
Rev. E. C. Jordan of the M. E. church.

The baby was Harvey Burnett Merrill. My grandmother was 10 years old, and talking about these terrible months still makes her cry...

Mainly Personal
William Babione of Mead creek, who is interested in mines
in the Big Horns, came down from the hills, Saturday, for
a brief sojourn in the valley. Mr. Babione paradoxically
reports the snows heavy but light - heavy falls lightly
packed, making progress difficult.

Commissioners' Proceedings, July 22, 1912
W. H. Babione appeared before the board complaining of the
raise in the assessment of his land and improvements.
After due consideration the board decided to change 35
acres of first-class land to second-class land and lower
the assessment $350, but made no change in the assessment
of his improvements.

No records in 1913. (But the database is still being built,
so if I remember, all of this should be revisited again later...)

Instead of the occasional "high noon" wedding it was midnight
or later Sunday morning when Allen S. Renie of Acme and Miss
Daisy Erma Brown of Des Moines were united in marriage.
The bride was met by the groom and Rev. J. H. Gillespie of
Sheridan, and a very few minutes later the marriage
ceremony took place aboard the Pullman. Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Babione were principal witnesses. The young people will
make their home at Acme.
